Geography

Location
Salzburg borders on Upper Austria to the north and northeast, on Styria to the southeast, on Carinthia and East Tyrol to the south (since 1919 a short stretch bordering on South Tyrol in Italy), on North Tyrol to the west, on Germany (Bavaria) to the northwest, where Berchtesgadener Land protrudes deeply into Salzburg.

The province acquired name due to its abundance of salt.
